In reply to your letter No 30695/25 of the 9th
instant regarding the request of the Tuchun of Yunnan
for British support in the present civil conflict in
China, I am directed by Mr. Secretary Chamberlain to
inform you that he concurs in the terms of the proposed
telegram to the Governor of Hongkong to the effect that His Majesty's Government adhere to the view that the
foreign Powers should not depart from their attitude
of neutrality in Chinese internal politics unless and
until the situation become a so threatening as to compel
re course to armed intervention as the sole means of
protecting the lives and property of their nationals.
2. As regards the statement that the Tuchun of
Yunnan is already receiving a substantial measure of support from the French Government, Mr. Chamberlain has no knowledge that the French Government are affording him any special support in connection with the present
Chine se disorders.
